Evidence in Evolution

Homologous--Similar features that came from a shared ancestor
  • Differenet animals can have similarities in bone structure

Analogous--Similar functions and look alike.
  • Different embryological development.
  • For example, bird's wings develop independently through recent ancestors.

Vestigal Structure: A functionless structure that was once functionable
  • For example. human tailbones and appendix.
  • Some functionless structures may be an important function in another organism.
  • Whales have a gene that stays unchanged, or conserved, such as the gene to make hind legs.

Similarities in Embryology

  1. When an animal is an embryo, they can look similiar to another organism.
  2. For example a gorrilla can look like a fish.

Similarities in Macromolecules
  1. Similar structure of organisms have a more recent ancestor
  2. Molecules of different species are similar but not identical
  3. Differ in amino acids
